Photo Essay | Tarkwa Bay

For the LONGEST time, Tarkwa Bay had been on my to-go list. My friends never wanted to go, citing reasons such as “it was too far”, “boat rides are not safe” or work just came up. Then, bae (@archfandroid) came to Lagos for the summer break and we decided to visit Tarkwa Bay.

We took a ferry (Fiki Marina) from under Falomo Bridge to Tarkwa Bay. The journey took about 20 minutes from Victoria Island and cost us N3,000 per person for a round trip. The boat ride was quite fun and exhilarating because we were moving against the tide of the Atlantic Ocean, there were times where the waves carried us up and down. If you usually have sea sickness, be prepared o!

On getting to Tarkwa Bay, we were surrounded by settlers who offered to help us carry our belongings while we waded the water to get to the bank of the beach. The ferry does not dock at the bank of the beach, so we had to enter the water. (P.S. Ensure you get waterproof bag to keep your belongings safe and preferably shorts or a short dress, so you dont get too wet).

Someone in the group had booked a beach canopy prior to our arrival.  If you want to book yours prior to your arrival, there is a popular guy called Godspower who can help you and ensure your experience at the beach is hassle free.

At the time we went, there were not a lot of people at the beach but the number of people increased later in the day. There isn’t much to do at the beach, you can join in the beach football, play around or even come with your games. We came with Cards Against Humanity and later bought Whot. You can just lie and relax or play in the water or even have a photoshoot (like we did).

If you are feeling adventourous, you can also plan an overnight camping trip at the Jaybee Beach Camp. You can join The Dare Experience on the 30th of September for an awesome experience. You can read all about NaijaNomads experience (here) camping at Tarkwa Bay just to give you an idea what to expect.

We also noticed massive cargo ships passing by which was quite interesting.

Tips

  • Go with a waterproof bag: You are going to be entering inside the water. It is safer to get a waterproof bag to protect your items.
  • You can get a ferry from Fiki Marina under Falomo Bridge, Tarzan marine beside Oriental Hotel or from Marina. The last ferry leaves at 5:30pm so be on the watch out. If you miss it, you would have to use the smaller boat/canoes.
  • Go with your entertainment (food, drinks, games): It would be cheaper to bring your own food and drinks.
  • Beach Chairs/Canopy: They are not free and as such, be prepared to pay for the chairs and canopy.

Have fun!

  1. Beach chairs and canopies aren’t free? Wow, that’s something.

  2. Hi,
I know this is a bit late and I hope you reply. I’m organizing a beach birthday party and we are all students, so I have to cut cost.
Do you know how much it is for a canoe ride? The gate fee is also how much please.
Also, is it compulsory to pay for the tents and chairs? I’d prefer to have a picnic style stuff, just blankets but I don’t know if it would be possible there.

Please answer, I would really appreciate it.
